Friday Caloric Advisory: Tuna Sub = Healthy?

Friday, April 4th, 2008

As a student, I used to eat the Tuna Subway Sandwich thinking it was my “healthy” option there - till I realized few years back that NOT every sandwich is 6 grams of Fat or less.

Today, one of my colleagues here was enjoying one, before I ruined it by telling her that it was 530 Calories and 31 Grams of Fat! (Lots’ of hidden Mayo in the tuna…) Sorry Lisa…(who originally thought 200 calories!)

By the way, most fast foods are required to post nutritional information online – or just Google it!

I Can Make You Thin…?

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Paul McKennaI watched the new show by Paul McKenna on TLC last Sunday, and it seems that, although simplistic, he does address important aspects of self-control and weight loss that others have failed to.  His four pillars in the first session were:

  • Eat when you’re hungry (duh?)
  • Eat slowly to enjoy the food (chew your food at least 20 times)
  • Eat Consciously (i.e. don’t get distracted by TV, reading etc. b/c you’ll eat more)
  • Stop when you’re full (ex. don’t have to finish your plate)

Great Fall Reads

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

While awaiting this site’s construction, here are some good reads you might enjoy:

  1. 1. Scientific American: Special Food Edition September 2007

I have read most of the articles, and if you’re short on time, I strongly recommend the “Eating made Simple”, and “Still hungry” articles. I particularly loved this edition because it addressed the economic aspects of obesity vs. starvation in the world. Extremely relevant to today’s paradox. Find it at any magazine stand (ex. shoppers, chapters)

  1. What to Eat by Marion Nestle (blog / book available at Chapters)

Marion Nestle is a renowned author, expert, and professor. I find her articles particularly eye opening. You might enjoy her other blog available at www.foodpolitics.com

These are a great Gym Read for the Stairmaster, elliptical, or bike…Read and share what you learned after you break a sweat!
